Plants that operate in conjunction with animal slaughterhouses or poultry processing plants are called integrated rendering plants. Plants that collect their raw materials from a variety of offsite sources are called independent rendering plants. Independent plants obtain animal by-product materials, including grease, blood, feathers, offal, and entire animal carcasses, from the following sources: butcher shops, supermarkets, restaurants, fast-food chains, poultry processors, slaughterhouses, farms, ranches, feedlots, and animal shelters."

This is one very good reason to get only high quality food, organic, natural, with high general standards including No Animal testing Labs.

Heres an excerpt from the PETA page " If you have been feeding your companion animals commercial pet foods, you may be jeopardizing their health. Supermarket pet foods are often composed of ground-up parts of animals deemed by U.S. Department of Agriculture inspectors unfit for human consumption. The flesh of animals who fall into one of the categories of the four D's—dead, dying, diseased, or disabled—is what often goes into pet food. Many of these animals have died of infections and other diseases. In all but a few states, it is legal to remove unusable parts from chickens and sell them to pet food manufacturers. Most pet foods contain the same hormones, pesticides, and antibiotics that are found in commercial meat products for humans. "

A lot of the companies on the PETA list have high standards and disclosure about where the ingredients come from. Some of them also have vegan options.

My current choices of foods and snacks for my dog usually come from
Natural Balance (has vegan options as well)
Solid Gold
Wysong (has vegan options)

Between checking for the food ingredients, analysis and food rating (eg http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/ ) , checking for the company practices ( testing and policies) and other issues which crop up now and then, it is a constant struggle to find the right dog/cat food.

Every few months , I pick up on the research and try some new and change out some of the foods, if there are any new controversies around those companies.

We also try to include fresh veggies and home cooked food into the schedule. Mostly it is some boiled rice and oats, with some fresh veggies (carrots, cauliflower, potato, bell pepper and such) added in when the rice is just about done(sometimes add flaxseeds or flax seed oil when cooled)I freeze this mix into ice cubes to last me a month or two( small dogs).

This also works great for our fosters. The dogs usually have sensitive stomachs and the dry food change does not help with all that stress. For the finicky ones, a small quantity of local and organic chicken or cottage cheese gets added to the rice mix and we are saved some extra walks or clean ups because of the poor upset tummies. There are a lot more recipes online, just google for home made dog or cat food recipes for a more balanced meal.

My new home should be very active like me, and have plenty of prior dog experience. I'd be fine with kids at least 13 years old. And, I'm good with some other dogs, but do need a cat-free home please.

Bringing Fido home! Part 4: First few days

First few hours:

The first few hours keep the dog on a leash except in a VERY securely fenced yard. A frightened or confused dog may bolt from a strange place, be aggressive towards dogs, people or cats and might try to mark his new house. It is easier to correct him by a quick tug on the leash. Keep him on a leash even in the house if he seems agitated or wants to pace. No off-leash parks or romps for at least a couple of weeks.

DON’T hover, don’t shower him with excessive attention or love, let him relax and work his way into the family. Ignore him for as much as possible, as hard as that is. You need to be the leader and he will find his place with time. Don’t be surprised if he sleeps a great deal once he relaxes.

Getting acclimated/housetraining helpers:

When you bring your new dog home, leash-walk so that he can take in the smells of the turf and relieve himself. Pick a special place and encourage him to potty there. Be patient; it may take 10 or 15 minutes. Always praise warmly when he relieves himself in an approved spot.

Next, enter the house and show him around. Keep him on leash. If he lifts his leg, give him a quick leash correction (yank on the leash and release) and tell him "No" to disrupt the action, then take him outside immediately. Offer him a treat for going in the right place.

Remember, your dog will be excited and anxious about his new home. Don't be surprised at panting and pacing, housetraining accidents, excessive drinking or chewing, or gastric upset. In addition, any dog, especially a male who was not neutered early, is likely to mark new territory - especially if other pets have lived there. Tell every member of your family to resist the temptation to overwhelm a new dog. Give him some time and space to get settled.

Crating:

Next, take him to his crate. Encourage him to sniff around; reward him with small treats for entering and staying in the crate. Keep soft bedding and safe toys in the crate; rotate the toys for variety.

Crate facts. Housetraining problems are the top reason people give up dogs. Crates aid in housetraining because of dogs' den instincts - they avoid messing where they sleep. Crate should also become their safe place. Crating is cruel only if the dog is physically uncomfortable or if left too often or too long. Limit crating to 4-5 hours maximum a day. Important: Teach your dog that good things come in the crate. Place appealing toys in the crate; feed in the crate. Stay in the room awhile and praise when the dog rests calmly in the crate. Resist letting the dog out if she cries. However, if she has to relieve herself, honor that. Over the transition period, gradually open the crate door and increase the number of rooms to which she has access.

After the house tour, take him outside to potty again. Be sure to take him to the same spot.

Important: If your dog is not housebroken, begin housetraining now. Stay tuned in and responsive to your dog's signals of when he needs to go. The more vigilant you are now, the more reliably housetrained he'll be later.

However, having a few accidents the first week does not mean a dog is not housebroken. Excitement can lead to accidents. In addition, males tend to mark in the house the day or two. Once he begins to settle in, and you begin educating him in acceptable behavior, he will relax and behave.

Routine:

Dogs thrive on routine, so orient your new companion to your schedule. Dog mostly relive themselves after a good meal. Take the dog out 15 -30 mins after his meal and praise him when he goes at the right place. Take him out there first thing in the morning, last thing at night, before or after meals, midday. Take him out every few hours the first few days to figure out a good routine. Once you know his potty time, you can walk him fewer times and space the walks to his comfort.

The dog will explore everything, so puppy-proof your house (place shoes inside closets, put electrical cords out of reach, move prized objects to higher ground, if you cannot keep an eye on him).

Food:

Try to transition to his new food slowly if possible. If you dont have the food he is accustomed to, start with mixing some of the new food with plain rice. Even the best of the tummies can act out because of the stress and changes.

For upset stomachs, keep the dog on a plain boiled chicken and rice diet and lowly transition to his daily dry food. Use some canned food in the transition as well.

Why foster

Because if you do

• The cuddly little scared thing waiting in some kennel at a shelter somewhere will get a chance to live in a warm home and a chance at adoption.
• The little thing who is scheduled to get that injection which will suck the life out of him, will get another chance to find someone who he can call home
• The scared and confused thing will be calmer and happier, and will give you and everyone he meets, all the love back and hence be more adoptable than the scared and snappy one he is at the shelter

Fostering is NOT difficult. A crate, food and toys, and some time from the daily schedule and some love is all that is needed. You can foster for as little as 2 weeks in a year to all the 52 weeks. After fostering once, you realize that it does not really affect the daily routine much.

I know foster parents who have fostered 100s of dogs. It has become a part of their life and it is difficult to imagine a schedule without a foster dog in it!. Foster parents become a bridge between the adopters and the dog. That dog might end up spending a good part of its life in a kennel, because the family who wants to adopt a dog like him might not know that he exists. The dog might be put to sleep because of a simple reason like lack of space in the shelter, even though the right family is waiting out there somewhere.

For example, there are a lot of small dogs in California Shelters and the kill rate is as high as 80%. By a lot I mean 5000 at just one shelter.

A lot of the small dogs are chihuahuas. That's because everyone in and around Hollywood wants a chi. So there is always a chi explosion in all California shelters. But in this state, we have more of bigger dogs in shelters and the smaller dogs usually get adopted within days. The smaller dog also have higher adoption fees, to help support the big ones. There is always a demand for small dogs and families who dont find one in shelters or rescues end up buying puppies from bad breeders or pet stores!.

With more and more rescues transporting pets around the nation to help reduce the kill rates and meet demands, there is a constant need for foster homes. If you have a spare room, or a garage and a yard and a few hours a day to care and share your love, give fostering a try!. The unconditional love you will get from those lost eyes will be all worth it!

Pet of the day! Need Foster for Boxer mix

She was emaciated and in terrible health when they picked her up. They live in a rural area in eastern Washington and when they tried calling animal control to pick her up, they were told that since they'd held onto her for more than 3 days she was legally theirs. No other shelter or rescue they contacted would take her, so they chained her to a dog house on their property and she has been living there for the last several months. Forgotten Dogs wants to help her, but we need a foster home willing to care for her and give her the socialization and love she needs to be adopted into a new home.

She appears to be a pit bull mix, along with some lab or Boxer, and seems to be 1.5-2 years old.

Forgotten Dogs will take care of all her medical care, including spay, vaccinations, flea treatment, deworming, and anything else she might need.

These knees need to be corrected to give Burt the best since at a long comfortable life. Burt had some handling issues when he arrived at R.E.D. foster care so we first resolved those issue so he could be a good patient during his recovery.

They are a cat lover's dream team! These kids are only about 7 months old. They are much loved, and will be missed in their foster home, but they need to get settled in their forever home as soon as possible.

Handsome Seymour is built like a stretch limo. He is long and lean with an elongated nose and figure, similar to the oriental cat breed. He is very outgoing, easy going, affectionate and mellow. He loves to be petted and scratched! Seymour is a silly, lovable, lap cat who entertains himself easily when alone with the simplest of household objects, but is ready to play interactively at any moment with his feline & human friends. His "twin" sister, Rubie, is almost identical, but petite, and more perfectly proportional. She also adores playtime, and has become extremely affectionate. Rubie is making up for lost time in her earlier shy kitten-hood. A switch was turned on suddenly, and now she cannot get enough of petting, scratching, grooming and attention of any sort. Like Seymour, she is very curious and intelligent.

http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/18610467 Snickers just arrived at Blind Dog Haven today. A wonderful woman let him hitch a plane ride to Seattle from Camarillo CA area. Snickers was born blind and has micro ophthalmia (small eyes). Snickers is about a year old, so still a young dog and he weighs about 5 lbs. He is a very sweet dog and quiet. He needs a home where he will get lots of attention and someone who is willing to spend a bit of time helping him to gain some normal dog experiences. Because he is blind he will need some guidance and lots of exposure to people, other dogs and cats, and environments. He was neutered just before flying up here so currently he is wearing a cone so that he can't lick his incision. He has been heartworm tested and is negative, he has had all of his vaccinations. He is good to go, all he need is a wonderful home.

This adorable sweetie was luckily rescued by an amazing person. As you can see, she likes his two pittie boys. She was rescued from a bad drug situation and clearly deserves a real life. We aim to find that for her and are grateful for her fosters kind heart. At the time he rescued her she was a bit fearful of people and he has been rehabilitating her and she is coming along really well. After a warm up period, she will try to be your lapdog :) She is young, healthy and full of life and ready to be loved! A bit more about Freya: She likes other doggies but not so much about cats. She is working on being good on a leash but does pull so a harness set up will be a good guide while she is in training to walk well. She loves to fetch and swim. She likes to play tug of war. She weighs 65 sexy lbs. She likes to sleep in the bed with you but will be ok in her kennel if that is your preference. Very loyal and playful, she is great with all humans. We have not seen her with kids so are not sure on that mark. She knows come, sit, stay and drop. Good girl! She has not yet been to a dog park, likely would be ok as long as supervised. Freya is desiring love and if you have it to give, she will take it. She loves to hike and does great off the leash on trails. If you are active, this will be a fun pal for you. What a friendship! Seattle area.

Pet of the day! Domingo

This 2 month old little cutie is actually a Formosan Mountain Dog, or a Taiwan street dog, and will end up being the most loyal and loving dog you will ever know. Beautiful and smart, these dogs were found on the streets of Taiwan where they were picked up by a rescue organization there. This is a special breed, and these dogs can be a little shy so please keep that in mind. However, most do great with kids and cats and are wonderful family members. Spice is a 2-year old gerbil who is friendly and inquisitive! He loves playing with cardboard tubes and burrowing in wood shavings. Bun Bun is the gray and white boy, a dwarf mix. Edna is the handsome lady in the agouti coat. Edna had a broken leg, which has healed a little awkwardly. She gets around fairly well and Bun Bun encourages her to be active. They would like a quiet home where they can become part of your family. Come meet Edna and Bun Bun today at the Seattle Animal Shelter. Rabbits are great house pets and require a litter box, some toys, hay, fresh vegetables and some pellet food.

They will entertain you constantly with their silly bunny dances. Rabbits like to be petted gently on their heads and most like to be gently brushed. Most rabbits are social and like to live with a rabbit friend if possible. It is very inexpensive to adopt a bunny from the Seattle Animal Shelter; however, you are expected to make a lifetime commitment to your pet. The primary caregiver must be a responsible adult. Your rabbit should be treated as an integral part of the family. With good care and lots of love, rabbits can live to be 7-10 years old.

He is a great dog, a loving companion who is friendly to people and dogs alike. He's been fine with cats when he visited them, too. His foster family says that you really CAN teach older dogs new tricks: he quickly learned the house rules and found his place amid their family and other dogs with no signs of aggression or destruction. He is good on a leash though he doesn't need a ton of exercise, and a zest for life with a very balanced personality. He prances when he is happy or excited. Buster is a very affectionate little guy who will give hugs and snuggle and has a gentle mouth. He's not very food focused - but, guard your pies! He's used to being in the house with his dog buddies during the workday with a midday break, but rally enjoys being with a family. He loves to rest on a pile of pillows but has to organize them just right. Then he rolls and wiggles and is goofy until he's in just the right spot. He's even rolled off the couch in his attempt at pillow perfection.

He's a healthy little guy who is happy, friendly and cute! Buster is in foster care in Seattle, just waiting to meet you. A minimum donation of $95 is requested, more if you are able. Adorable brown and white tabby kittens (as well as other shades!) ready to greet you with purrs at the Seattle Humane Society in Bellevue! These kittens are bundles of energy who are ready to play, play, play! If you are looking for a friendly kitty to share your life with, then come to the Seattle Humane Society today! You may just fall in love! As with all of our shelter guests, these little tykes will go home spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped. Pet of the day Blanca!

From her loving foster: Blanca is a little sweetheart! Blanca is a darling Chihuahua/Terrier mix. She is very small. She is extremely cute and soft! She is very playful, agile, and full of energy, but will easily relax and nap and loves to cuddle. She is definitely a lap dog but will listen to you and not jump up if you dont want her to. She is just as content by your feet on the floor. She does have a tendency to bark at strangers at the door but will back off immediately and get friendly when instructed. She is great with people however we would not recommend her for young children until she understands that she doesn't need to be bossy with her food or toys. She is very smart and is trainable. I have already taught her how to sit for a treat (one day). She initially barked at the cat but then didn't pay much attention, and is very inquisitive of other dogs and cats.
